Commissioning your artwork
1) Please contact me either via email or using the form provided to tell me you are interested in having some artwork commissioned. Let me know if you have any particular requirements or preferences (e.g. canvas size, head and shoulders or full body, plain / mottled background, as per the photo or superimposed onto another background etc) and send me a digital copy of your favourite photo or the combination of photos you would like me to work from.

In order for me to create the best possible portrait for you I will need the highest quality photograph to work from (please see tips below):

  • Always use natural light if possible. Photographs taken outside are best in order to avoid unnatural lighting and colouring. Try to avoid a really sunny day as this can result in excess shadowing and may cause your pet to squint if looking into the sun. I recommend taking the photo with the sun behind you to avoid casting shadows across your pet.
  • If taking the photo indoors, try and take it by a large window; again, avoid positioning your pet between the window and the camera (with the light source directly behind him/her) as this will result in excess shadowing, with details being lost and colours looking washed out.
  • The eyes are 'the windows to the soul' so try and get as much detail and definition as possible. Avoid using flash as this will cause red-eye (and may unnerve your pet).
  • Taking the photo at your pet's eye level or below will give you the best and most natural-looking results and will avoid distortion.
  • Modern phone cameras are so good now that they should easily be able to take a photo with a high enough resolution to work from. Please ensure you email the photograph at the highest resolution possible.
  • If you would like a portrait with more than one subject, I can combine different photos (I know how hard it can be to get the perfect photo of one, let alone a group all at once!) but it is important that the lighting and posing / camera position are consistent. For example, one taken indoors and one taken outdoors with light coming from different angles or looking down on one pet and looking up at the other will look odd when combined.
2) After discussion and agreeing the format for the artwork, I will be able to give you a final quotation and estimated lead-time. Please note that lead-times may vary depending on work-load so if you have a particular date or occasion in mind, to avoid disappointment, please allow plenty of time for me to complete your artwork.
3) When you are happy to proceed, I will ask for a 30% deposit to start your artwork.
4) You are welcome to have as many or as few work-in-progress photos as you wish, just let me know. Once I have finished your painting, I will send you a photo electronically. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with anything, you are very welcome to tell me and I will do my best to re-do / adjust accordingly. Once you are 100% satisfied and the paint has dried fully, I will ask for the remaining 70% and then your artwork will be dispatched / delivered to you.
